Two Children Killed in Suspected Attack Amid Escalating Manipur Ethnic Tensions
Two children were killed in a suspected attack in Manipur amid rising ethnic tensions, triggering protests, curfews, and an NIA probe. The incident, blamed on Kuki militants but denied by their groups, adds to a conflict that has claimed over 250 lives since 2023.
Meitei leaders blamed Kuki militants for what they described as a deliberate strike, alleging targeted violence in the sensitive area. However, Kuki groups denied any involvement, rejecting the accusations as tensions between the communities deepened further.
The incident triggered widespread protests across the region, marked by roadblocks, tire burnings, and an attack on a security post. The violence during these protests resulted in two additional deaths and left at least 20 people injured, underscoring the volatile situation on the ground. Authorities also flagged the circulation of debunked online hoaxes related to Army trucks, which contributed to public panic and unrest.
In response to the deteriorating law and order situation, the Manipur government imposed curfews and suspended internet services to curb the spread of misinformation and prevent further escalation. The investigation into the incident has been handed over to the National Investigation Agency, signaling the seriousness of the case and the need for a comprehensive probe.
Chief Minister N. Biren Singh condemned the incident as an “assault on humanity,” calling for restraint and accountability. Leaders across the spectrum urged for justice and dialogue, emphasizing the urgent need to address the underlying tensions.
The latest violence adds to a grim toll in the ongoing conflict, which has claimed over 250 lives since 2023, highlighting the persistent fragility of peace and the urgent necessity for resolution in Manipur
